Abbreviated curriculum vitae of Dr. Michael Swindle

M. Michael Swindle, D.V.M. is the Director, Division of Laboratory Animal Resources and Professor & Chairman in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He also holds a Professorship in the Department of Surgery. He has been employed at MUSC since 1985.

Dr. Swindle received his B.S. degree (1968) and his D.V.M. degree (1969), both from Texas A & M University and is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (1982) and a Defacto Specialist, European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (2001). He was in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps from 1969 to 1972; in private veterinary practice from 1972 to 1979; and at Johns Hopkins Medical School from 1979-1985.

He has served the following professional organizations either as a member of the board of directors, committee chairman and/or officer: American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care; American Association for Laboratory Animal Science; American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine; American Heart Association; Academy of Surgical Research; S.C. Consortium for Comparative Medicine; American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners; DHHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Xenotransplantation; European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He is the recipient of the Smithy Research Award from the American Heart Association, the Von Recum Award from the Academy of Surgical Research and the Brewer Scientific Achievement Award from the Animal Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

His publications and presentations are as follows: Abstracts (109), Journal Articles (70), Books & Book Chapters (40) and Oral Presentations (>300). He has been primary or co-investigator on >$12 million in grant funding.

This is an updated and expanded version of the 1998 textbook by the same author, M. Michael Swindle, DVM from the Medical University of South Carolina (http://research.musc.edu/dlar/home.htm). The section on anesthesia and perioperative care has been greatly expanded and updated. All of the organ and system chapters have been updated with new techniques. New chapters include Toxicology and Radiobiology which were not included in the first edition. There is an attached CD with Angiographic, Ultrasound, MRI, CT, and PET images. A large number of tables with normal biological data, organ sizes and measurements will be included in an appendix in the new edition.
